Did you know? - There are currently 500,000 caravans on the road.
Staying in a caravan is second only in popularity to staying with friends in
terms of holiday accommodation. The professional construction of caravans that
could be hooked up to cars started in Birmingham in 1919. - You do now.
The Camping and Caravanning Club celebrated their 100th birthday in 2001.
It was 100 years since Thomas Holding, the founder of the Club, started it all.
We have had some Great men as Presidents of the Club. Captain Scott of The
Antarctic who took a special pennon with him to the South Pole. Lord
Baden-Powell took over as President in 1919.
World famous environmentalist, Professor David Bellamy OBE, is our current
President. Lord Robert Baden-Powell had asked to step down as President of
the Club after ten years. His invaluable support over the years has been much
appreciated. Lord Baden-Powell is the grandson of the first Lord Baden-Powell,
founder of the Scout movement and President of the Club from 1919 to 1940. The
nomination of David Bellamy was received with acclaim at the 55th AGM of the
Camping & Caravanning Club. David Bellamy is an outdoor enthusiast who
claims "..a bivvy bag is the best place in the world" He actively
promotes countryside conservation through the David Bellamy Conservation
Awards.
Our current Patron is HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. In 1998
the Club celebrated 50 years of royal patronage - King George VI granted his
patronage in 1948. Prince Philip became Patron in 1952 after the King's death.
The Camping & Caravanning Club is recognised by the Department of the
Environment, Transport and the Regions as an "exempt organisation"
within the terms of the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960. This
means that the club is permitted to issue a certificate to landowners enabling
them to establish a small caravan site without the need for planning
permission. These sites are only available for use by Club members and there
are nearly 1,500 such "5-Van" sites listed in the clubs publications.
There are a team of voluntary Site Inspectors, who visit the sites prior to
certification, and then on an annual basis, to ensure the certificated sites
available are of a suitable standard, and are environmentally friendly.
The Centenary meet at Coombe Abbey, and the service of re-dedication at Coventry
Cathederal in 2002, were a great success. Take a look at some of the photographs
